How many shock absorbers are in an LG washing machine?

Shock absorbers are the reason your LG washing machine doesn’t shake uncontrollably when it’s in the spin cycle, if you’ve ever wondered. Even when handling large loads, these vital components are crucial to the smooth and silent operation of your appliance.

However, how many shock absorbers are present in an LG washing machine in reality? This is a question that may arise during troubleshooting or simply when you’re interested in learning more about your machine’s operation. Understanding this information will help you better understand the inner workings of your washing machine and determine when these important parts may need to be replaced.

Number of shock-absorbing elements

Every washing machine, including LG models, has a thoughtful shock-absorbing mechanism. In order to reduce the centrifugal force coming from the rotating drum, springs and dampers are included. From above, the first ones support the tank, and from below, the second ones offer a "soft landing."

To maintain the equilibrium of the tank and the system as a whole, dampers are stands equipped with a piston that can reduce vibration. They are more resistant to wear than shock absorbers since they lack internal springs. However, it is not without malfunctions: the "legs" frequently give out under excessive load.

The LG washing machine has multiple upper springs and two dampers.

Two damper elements are located on either side of the washing tank in the washing machine. Usually, one of them is broken, while the other is undamaged. However, this exacerbates the machine’s problems because the loaded tank strikes the body quickly, the drum balance is upset, and vibration is damped unevenly.

Two shock absorbers are a standard feature of most LG washing machines. These parts are crucial for minimizing noise and vibrations during the spin cycle, which keeps the machine operating smoothly and silently.

Removing old and installing new parts

Operating an LG washing machine with malfunctioning shock absorbers carries a risk of significant mechanical damage. When there is even the slightest indication that the racks are breaking, it is preferable to take them apart and replace them with new ones. To accomplish this, you must:

  • prepare pliers, a hammer, a flat-head screwdriver and a Phillips screwdriver;
  • disconnect the washing machine from the utilities;
  • turn the machine upside down;
  • find the dampers – two posts fixed on both sides of the tank;
  • find the plastic locking pins on each end of the shock absorber;
  • clamp the tongue on the pin;
  • "sink" the lock into the damper and knock it out with a hammer or pliers;
  • pull out the pin;
  • repeat the steps from the other end of the post, and then – on the second damper;
  • pull the struts and pull them out of the grooves.

The damper can be fixed by simply cleaning it, applying technical grease, and using a special gasket to replace the internal resistance. Self-repair is an expensive and labor-intensive endeavor, though. It is much simpler to purchase new struts, which range in price from 200 to 1000 rubles, rather than complicate the task. You should pay close attention to the LG washing machine’s serial number when selecting an analog.

Even if one damper is entirely intact, dampers are always replaced in pairs!

To ensure consistent vibration damping, dampers must always be replaced in pairs, so two will be needed for replacement. Installation is done in reverse order and in accordance with the above-described instructions:

  • turn the damper with the rod down (otherwise dust will get into the piston, which will accelerate the wear of the part);
  • insert the rack into the grooves;
  • apply the pin and carefully hammer it into the hole.

The pin "enters" the new damper tightly, so a lot of force will be required. Make sure to inspect the tongue at the end; it should "stand" and secure the rack. You will need to use a flat screwdriver to pry up the latch if it does not rise. After that, the process is carried out again on the shock absorbers’ remaining ends.

After the replacement is finished, put the washing machine back on its feet. After that, take off the top cover and apply pressure with your hand to the washing tank. The work is done correctly if, following the push, the capacity returns to the previous level quickly.

Model Number of Shock Absorbers
LG Front-Load 2
LG Top-Load Typically 2
LG High-Capacity 2 or 4, depending on the model

Two shock absorbers are standard on LG washing machines, and they are essential to preserving the stability of the machine while it is in use. These parts ensure that the machine spins smoothly and silently by assisting in the absorption of shocks and vibrations.

Overly loud noises or shaking during a washing cycle could indicate that the shock absorbers are broken or worn out. These problems are frequently resolved and your washing machine’s lifespan can be increased by replacing them.

Knowing what the shock absorbers in your LG washing machine do will help you take care of any possible issues and fix them before they get out of hand. Your machine can function well for many years with routine maintenance and prompt replacement of worn parts.
